Esquimalt Lagoon (near Fort Rodd Hill)

Date: Sunday, November 25

Meet: Just across the bridge as you come onto the spit.

Time: 10:00 AM at Esquimalt Lagoon.  Those wishing to carpool should meet at the Island Savings Centre parking lot, west of the library at 9:00 AM, leave at 9:10 AM. The distance is approx. 55 KM.

Costs: None

Washrooms:  A good set on the west end of the spit

Walking Conditions: flat asphalt, flat gravel road side, sloped sandy and sloped pebble and gravel beaches, driftwood, gentle slope from road to water edge

Directions: From the Library at the Island Savings Centre, turn left to Island High Way, turn right, then travel south about 50 km to EXIT 11, exit right on ramp to stop sign, turn right to intersection of high way 1A (six mile pub on your right) turn right about 2 1/2 km then turn left onto Ocean Blvd-follow signs to Esqimalt Lagoon.

Cautions: Windy area dress accordingly, if it is sunny and warm it will still be cold due to the wind.  There may be slippery beaches in some areas-Swans may approach you wanting to be fed, they are big and strong, caution is advised

Features: Long spit between the Straight of Juan de Fuca and Hatley Castle

Photo Opportunities: Sandy and pebble beaches, water fowl including various ducks, trumpeter and mute swans, shore birds, Weather permitting: views of Hatley Castle, the Olympic Mountains, ships, boats, sail boarders.
