Field Trip ~ Outing: Hazelnut Hills Farm
Outing DATE : Saturday 11th October 2025
Hazelnut Hills Farm, 3480 Henry Rd, Chemainus
Time – 9:15am – Meet at Fuller Lake Arena to carpool over to the farm (less cars on their property)
Our hostess is Alexis Dunabeitia, her husband and their infant son (I think his name is Orion????)
LUNCH : At 11:30 we can leave the farm and head to Willow Street Cafe OR the Hideaway (not sure if they are good still)….. (I will make a reservation).
What to expect – HOPEFULLY to see harvesting but not predictable. Nuts in trees and on the ground. The new catkins. Rows of trees with fall leaves, ponds, birds, chickens in a coop and marsh creatures. There are 3 fields to visit some old trees 60 yrs. There is a gravel road loop through the area if you choose or walk through grassy areas to the orchards. The orchards themselves are very clean and clear of debris and grass… bare is the term I would use. Watch underfoot for fallen nuts. The grounds are easy walking and flat with some easy rolling hill. The gravel road has rocks and is a typical farm road. Some small wooden bridges on the way to the orchard across a stream.
If harvest is happening, watch for tractors and hazelnut collecting machines. One part of the barn is open and we can photograph. The other is closed to public for food safe reasons.
We have the option to purchase shelled or unshelled nuts. $10-$20 respectfully.
NOTE: The gate is a ‘push-button-to-open’ and will close behind you. It remains open long enough for 2 cars to go through.
Dress for the weather. Wear good sturdy shoes.
